KU Leuven’s «Children’s University» (Kinderuniversiteit) event recently captivated young scientists-in-the-making with an exciting day of animal physics exploration. The event, aimed at igniting scientific curiosity in children, featured a surprise appearance by none other than the famous philosopher and scientist, René Descartes.
SSECOID fellow Solmaz Khoshavaz participated in the event, joining a team of dedicated mentors who guided the children through various scientific activities. The young participants were treated to a hands-on learning experience focused on the physics of animal movement and sound.
One of the highlights of the day was the opportunity to study the locomotion of frogs and cats. Children observed and analyzed how these animals move, gaining insights into their biomechanics and behavioral patterns. This activity provided a unique perspective on the natural world and the principles of physics that govern animal movement.
The event also delved into the fascinating world of animal acoustics (subject linked to SSECOID science). Participants investigated the sound-making processes of bees and mosquitoes, learning about the intricate mechanisms these insects use to produce their distinctive buzzes.
The surprise appearance of René Descartes, portrayed by an actor, added an extra layer of excitement and inspiration to the event. Descartes, known for his groundbreaking work in philosophy and science, engaged with the children, encouraging their curiosity and love for scientific inquiry.
This Children’s University event exemplifies KU Leuven’s commitment to fostering scientific interest in young minds, potentially inspiring the next generation of scientists and researchers
